The 100th anniversary of the International Match was contested between USA
and Great Britain-Ireland over September 26-30, 2005 at the Plaza Hotel in Las
Vegas, Nevada. The United States was victorious with 71 wins to 18 losses and
111 games drawn for total of 200 games.
Joe Schwartz compiled the best individual record, going undefeated (10 wins)
while playing all 20 of his games. Hugh Devlin led the visiting team with six
wins. Leo Levitt withdrew after two days of play. Richard Beckwith withdrew
after three days of play due to illness.
This was to the first visit to Las Vegas (if not the United States) for much of
the Great-Britain-Ireland team. They seemed to enjoy the sights of Las Vegas
very much. Our friends from across the pond displayed excellent sportsmanship
all week.
The event was preceded by a WCDF meeting, where Hugh Devlin agreed to replace
Charles Walker as WCDF president.
Special acknowledgment goes to Gerry Lopez for coordination the venue, Ian &
Joan Caws for an another outstanding job as referee, and Alan Millhone for
providing clocks and special score-sheets. Joe Schwartz hosted a pizza party and
a “best checker story” party on Thursday evening.
The upcoming tournament book will present annotated games, pictures, and other
features. The suggested price is $40 for a book copy, or $100 for a numbered
copy. See above link (located above menu options) for more info.

Hello everyone: I just now got home and this morning found my photo on the front
page of the Las Vegas Sun Newspaper. You can go to "Las Vegas Sun Review
Journal" on the internet and you will find the entire article and photos of the
International Match. I had a wonderful time and even got to play for our team a
few rounds, quite an honor. Mr. Joe Schwartz was our top finisher with 10 wins
and 10 draws ! Congratulations Joe and many thanks for your support for this
match. Gerry Lopez is taking orders for the match book and would be pleased to
hear from any who are interested in a book when completed. I will report more
later, just wanted to give a 'heads up' on the newspaper article this morning.
Sincerely:
